The Columbus South Asian community has roughly tripled in the last two decades. The metro is now home to an estimated 60,000 to 80,000 South Asians, concentrated in a few specific suburbs and tied to a few specific employers. It is not a coastal-sized community. It is something more interesting: a fast-growing, professionally-rooted, multigenerational diaspora that knows what it is.

The suburbs.

Dublin: the densest desi suburb in central Ohio. Roughly 12 percent Asian, with Indian Americans the largest sub-group. Heavy Gujarati, Telugu, and Punjabi presence. Dublin City Schools have particularly large Indian American student populations and several gurudwaras and mandirs are within a fifteen-minute drive.

Hilliard, Powell, and Westerville: the growing northern and northwestern suburbs. Hilliard has a particularly large Telugu and Tamil community concentrated around tech and healthcare jobs. Powell has a smaller but established Indian American community.

The Bharatiya Hindu Temple in Powell is one of the largest Hindu temples in the Midwest and anchors the community across all the suburbs. The Sri Ganesha Temple in nearby Pickerington serves a particularly active Telugu community.

The Ohio State University campus area has a substantial Indian student population, with active Indian Students Association, Hindu YUVA, MSA, and Tamil Sangam chapters. Many graduates settle into the broader Columbus metro after finishing degrees.

What is different about Columbus.

The Columbus desi community is unusually professionally concentrated. Honda's American HQ in Marysville, Battelle, JPMorgan's massive Columbus presence, Nationwide Insurance, and OSU's medical and engineering complexes have together pulled a steady stream of South Asian professionals to central Ohio for two decades. The result is a community that is suburban, family-rooted, and quietly affluent.

The downside for a single in Columbus is that the dating scene gets treated as if it does not exist. Most dating apps act like Ohio is one undifferentiated map. Most desi-specific apps build for Edison, Queens, and the Bay Area first and treat the Midwest as an afterthought.
